  • The Lion King is a musical based on the 1994 Disney animated film
  • It debuted July 8, 1997, in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theatre
  • The official opening on broadway was November 13, 1997

The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a young lion who is to succeed his father, Mufasa, as king; however, after Simba's uncle Scar murders Mufasa, Simba is fooled into thinking he was responsible and flees into exile in shame and despair. Upon maturation living with two wastrels, Simba is given some valuable perspective from his friend, Nala, and his shaman, Rafiki, before returning to challenge Scar to end his tyranny.

The musical became one of the most successful in Broadway history, winning six Tony Awards including Best Music, and is still running to this day in New York, becoming the fourth longest-running show and highest grossing Broadway production in history. The show's financial success led to adaptations all over the world.
