When is it used?


Used when a family reports a language other than English on home language survey

How is it used?

-Test stops at proficiency levels

Usefulness

• Low anxiety
• Quick assessment
• Progress through years
• Demonstrate language ability
• Stops at proficiency level (dependent on how many incorrect answers)

-Generalizability Theory: examination of measurement error in relation to student performance (Sloane-Flores)

Ex: multiple responses allowed for categories, "any appropriate answer"

Limitations

• Not extremely detailed
• Could cause Incorrect placements
• Unclear whether based on ELL students learning English or just English standards
• More fluency/levels = more time (child could lose interest)

-Cultural Validity

Maybe a child has never swam before or don't have pet dogs in their home country

Modifications

-Provide more training for teachers
-More options for child responses (ex: "Mama" for Mom)
-Publish/make clear the assessment is normed on ELL students
