PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Drama- the acted performance of a story that involves action and dialogue between its characters.

Usually performed on a stage, almost always contains conflict, resolution and character growth. Can be written in prose or poetry. Instead of using narration to convey setting, dramas usually use props and scenery. Main types are tragedy and comedy.

TRAGEDY

  • Classic tragedy began in Ancient Greece.
  • The protagonist faces an impossible trial of fate, usually brought on by a tragic flaw, that leads to death.

MELODRAMA

  • A melodrama is dramatic, but not tragic
  • Characters usually don't die
  • Focuses on social concerns rather than universal themes

COMEDY

  • Comedies mock societies conventions
  • Usually ends in a marriage to signal a new life

A farce is an exaggerated dramatic comedy.

DEFINITIONS

  • Dialogue- conversation between two characters in a written or acted-out work
  • Monologue- a speech given by one character alone, sometimes directly to the audience
  • Soliloquy- a type of monologue, character is typically alone on stage
