A SUBSTANCE THAT IS TAKEN INTO OR PLACED ON THE BODY

MEDICATION EFFECTS

  • Local Effect-Medication such as eye drops and skin creams that are applied directly to the skin
  • Systemic Effect- pills or liquids given orally,injections in the bloodstream on a specific organ of body.

  • Desired Effect-
  • Means that the medication is doing what it is supposed to.
  • Side Effects-
  • Medications that have a systemic effect on the body.

  • Adverse Effects-
  • A medication or when a medication accumulates in the body, causing toxicity.
  • Dependence-
  • When an individual develops a physical or psychological need for a medication.

  • Tolerance-
  • Happens when, over time or with repeated dosages, the individual's response to the medication.
  • Interactions-occur between medications or between medications and food.
  • No Apparent Effect-Individual symptoms have not improved or gone away.
  • Paradoxical Effect- When medications work in an opposite way.

IMPORTANCE OF BLOOD LEVELS AND TEST

  • Ask if theres a certain time to take a sample
  • Ask if meds should be given b4 blood sample
  • Ask if ok if he can eat b4 sample is taken

MEDS CYCLE

  • Observation:look for changes in behavior and physically
  • Report ant change to the right person at the right time
  • Notify the guardian & nurse trainer when meds are changed
  • Record meds info on appropriate form
  • Administer meds as ordered
