THE BATTLE OF AMIENS

  • Began in 1819
  • Between the German and allied forces.
  • Located on the western front.
  • First battle that became an all armed coordinated attack.
  • Used artillery tanks and aircraft.

  • The last great battle on the Western front.
  • Launched a surprise attack on August 8th.
  • British artillery opened fire on specific german targets
  • They were in trenches within 500 yards of each other.
  • Bulk of the sllied forces was unknown to the Germans.

  • Heavy tanks were used to attack well defended german positions.
  • Smaller tanks were used to provoke german offenses.
  • Followed by 700 artillery, the dense fog contributed to the surprise attack.
  • Phosphorus bombs were dropped.
  • Allied forces broke through the German lines and created a gap 24 Kilometers long.

  • The germans were overwhelmed by the attack and began to surrender everywhere.
  • 22,000 of the allied forces were either killed or wounded.
  • 74,000 of the Germans were killed, wounded, or captured.
  • Ended on November 11th, 1918, when armistice was signed and World War One ended.
