Founders
The New Hampshire colony was founded 1629. The land was given in a grand 7 years before by the council of New England to Sir Fernando Gorges and John Mason. The first settlement was set up in 1623 by the mouth of the Piscataqua River, and was called Little Harbor.
Reasons for Founding
New Hampshire was a planed colony and the land was granted to Captain John Mason, and he sent settlers to create a fishing colony. He spent a lot of money building towns and defenses. He died before he saw it.
People in the Colony
Unlike other colonies New Hampshire was not begun who were escaping persecution. It was begun by the English king and was a planned colony in which he sent ships and provisions and gave free land with the requirement that is would always be subject the the English crown.
Some colonists came to escape hinge rents and finds and work for themselves on their own land. Fishing provided the best income.
Climate and Geography
The geography of New Hampshire includes mountains, trees, and rivers. The soil was difficult to farm and not good for most crops because it was poor and rocky. The summers were mild and short, but the winters were very cold and long.
Economy
The colony's economy was heavily based on fishing and whaling, although lumber from the dense forest was also important. Trade involved mainly fish, timber, furs, ships, maple syrup, copper, whale oil, rum, and livestock. Sawmills, shipyards, and warehouses were very important. The economy was based on manufacture and industries like ship building and the manufacture and the export of rum.
Religion
Colonial New Hampshire was mainly occupied by the Puritans. They did not allow any other form of religion. There religion was very strict and they enforced a strike moral code and promoted prosperity, modesty, and decency.
Politics
New Hampshire was a royal colony of England. It was a propitiatory colony. At one point Massachusetts' governors also governed New Hampshire. Later the king of England ruled where the border of the two states should be and also separates the governor ship. The new government included a governor, his advisers, and a representative assembly.
