WHO IS MARTIN FROBISHER

  • Was born around 1535
  • Dad died when he was 10 years old
  • Mom died when he was 13 years old
  • Started exploring when was 14 years old
  • Interested in navigation and sailing. All his life
  • In 1588, Frobisher was knighted for his service in the war
  • He is considered Canada's most important explorer
  • He died on November 22,1594

WHAT DID MARTIN FROBISHER DO?

  • Many people died of scurvy on his expeditions
  • He made three attempts to find the Northwest Passage to Asia.
  • Trying to find the Northwest passage so that he could find riches, spices, gold and black ore
  • Discovered land in Canada's north instead
  • He discovered Frobisher bay and Frobisher straits
  • Opened up exploration in Canada's North
  • He explored islands that are in present day nunavut

  • Sailed to Europe, Africa and Canada's far north
  • Sailed the Atlantic ocean
  • Frobisher claimed Baffin Island for England
  • He also explored Africa

WHEN DID FROBISHER DO IT

  • In 1578 he made his last trip to Canada
  • In 1576 Frobisher began a series of expeditions to what is now known as Canada. He was trying to find the passageway to Asia
  • In 1577 he made his second trip to Canada
  • 1554 he went on two voyages to Africa

  • For riches,spices,gold and black ore
  • Went exploring because he was interested in sailing and in navigation

  • Sailed on a ship called the Aid on his second trip to Canada
  • Had 15 ships in his fleet
  • Also sailed on two ships named the Gabriel and the Michael
  • Had a map, gloves, a compass and an Astrolab

  • Opened up new travel routes to Canada's far north
  • Named land after him such as Frobisher Bay and Frobisher Straits
  • Lot of places in Canada named after Martin Frobisher
  • He opened up new travel routes for other explorers
