The transcontinental railroad is a railroad that goes across the country. The railroads helped deliver supplies. The gold, silver, and other metals that were mined had little value unless sent to a market. Towns were usually built along the railroads so the towns could get supplies.
This is a cattle trail that ranchers used to herd cattle to railroads or distant markets. The ranchers went on long drives to sell their cattle. They traveled hundreds of miles.
Cowhands helped herd cattle. The cowhands from a Hispanic origin were called vaqueros. The cowhands faced many dangers, including violent storms, rustlers, and stampedes.
This shows the silver or gold that was mined. Miners made little profit if the gold or silver that was mined wasn't sold at a market . If the gold or silver was sold, the mines made a large profit.
This is a boomtown. Boomtowns are towns that seemed to appear overnight. One person will find gold or silver and others come in hopes of profit. Once the silver or gold was gone, everyone left, creating a boomtown.
