MATH SKILLS NEEDED FOR A PRO BASEBALL PLAYER

  • Pitchers and batters have to know the most math skills in baseball
  • Pitchers have to know the percentage of first pitches a batter will take
  • Or they might have to know a batters on base percentage or batting average
  • A batter might have to know many times does a pitcher throw a certain pitch
  • A catcher should know how many times does the guy on first steal when he's on base

MATH PROBLEM

  • The distance between each of the 4 consecutive bases on a baseball diamond is 90 feet
  • How far does a catcher have to throw the ball to get to home plate to second base?

SOLUTION TO MATH PROBLEM

  • We would have to use the Pythagorean theorem to solve this problem. A squared + b squared= c squared
  • If we're trying to find how far it is it'd have to be 90 squared x 90 squared because we don't know a length of the side
  • That would equal 8,100 squared. Then it would give us 16,200
  • And then we'd want to find the square root of 16,200
  • Which is 127.27. So our final answer would be 127.27 feet from home plate to second base
