Part 2: Monophysites

While Nestorians let Trinitarian doctrine control Christological doctrine, Monophysites were more concerned with the Economy of the Trinity.

Basic Beliefs of Monophysites

  • Accepted all councils and church fathers before Chalcedon
  • Rejected Chalcedon because it was too Nestorian (P2:52)
  • Desired to keep role of Logos distinct from Father and Spirit
  • Economy of Trinity > Theology

Important Definition of Terms

  • Hypostasis - The Distinctive (3 in the Trinity)
  • Ousia - The common (1 Shared Ousia)
  • Nature - The Common (1 Shared Nature)

Monophysite Explanation of Incarnation

  • Union of two natures, resulting in one new hypostasis
