Todorov's Narrative Theory

Todorov believed that all films/videos follow the same narrative pattern.

the five stages of narrative

• A state of equilibrium
• A disruption of equilibiru
• The recognition of disorder
• An attempt to repair the disruption
• The restoration of equilibrium

Example:

Equilibrium: Shots of the ice skaters winning and cheering

Disruption: Male skater is injured and cannot skate

Realisation: Coach remembers when he used to ice skate - realises he needs to step in

Attempt to Repair Disruption: Coach enters competition and performs with female


Restoration of Equilibrium: Ice skaters succeed in competition
