BERLIN CONFERENCE

  • regulated European colonization and trade
  • during the New Imperialism period
  • coincided with Germany's sudden emergence as an imperial power
  • Called for by Portugal and organized by Otto von Bismarck

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • Imperialism is empire building.
  • The king of Belgium wanted the Congo region in Africa.
  • Ethiopia warded off any colonization from Europe, allowing freedom
  • Portugal established São Tomé off the coast of Gabon

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • Divided most lands in Berlin conference
  • Took land by force by the new tech that massacred Africans
  • Used natives to help mine for new minerals
  • Sometimes ruled through already established kingdoms

END OF COLONIALISM

  • After WWII many natives were given independence
  • Many rebellions took place and nations gained independence
  • Europe needed to regroup after the war, giving up control
  • The colonies sometimes threw countries in anarchy

LASTING EFFECTS

  • Civil war in Sudan because of the different groups joined by the boarders
  • Genocide in Rwanda when one group hated the other that were once joined by borders
  • Economies struggled because of the loss of mother countries
  • Colonial boundaries were translated into country boarders
