PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Overexploitation
~over use of species with economic value- a factor in species extinction.

Example: THE U.S. HAD ONLY ONE SPECIES OF PARROT, WHICH WAS THE CAROLINA PARAKEET. THE PARAKEET WAS HUNTED TO EXTINCTION EARLY IN THE LAST CENTURY. IT WAS HUNTED FOR FOOD AND ITS FEATHERS.

Example: mammal species have always been hunted for food, fur, sport, and their horns/antlers.

Acid precipitation
~ meteorological precipitation that is relatively acidic.

Example: two of the main problems are sulfuric from power plants and nitric from cars. They linger in the atmosphere until they mix with water.

When acid gets into lakes and streams it kills all the living organisms in it.

Eutrophication
~ Water pollution from nitrogen-rich and phosphorus-rich substances flowing into waterways, causing algal overgrowth.

Example: Humans help the algae and plants in the lakes to grow faster by nitrates they release from the creation of waste.

Phosphate does the same thing nitrates do. They make the algae grow faster, which causes more of it.
