Where are we in space and why does it matter?

WHERE IS OUR GALAXY IN THE UNIVERSE AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

• Our galaxy is located in the virgo supercluster.
• the virgo supercluster is made up of multiple galaxies.
• our galaxy is located in the virgo supercluster which is about 160 million light years across from earth
• Our galaxy is called the milky way galaxy

Our solar system is located in the milky way galaxy. The milky way galaxy is a spiral galaxy that is about 100,000 light years from us.

WHERE IS EARTH IN SPACE?

• Earth is the third planet from the sun
• earth is 92.96 million miles away from the sun
• It is important because earth is the only planet that can support human life because earth is located in just the perfect place at the perfect angle.

WHY DOES EARTH HAVE A 23.5 DEGREE TILT

• The earth has a 23.5 degree tilt so that the earth has seasons
• While the earth is tilting either the Southern Hemisphere or the northern hemisphere is pointing towards the sun.
• So if the Southern Hemisphere is towards the sun then it will be summer and then it would be winter in the northern hemisphere.

EARTH ROTATES AND THIS CAUSES DAY AND NIGHT

• earth rotates on what is called its axis
• On its axis it rotates around the sun.
• As the earth rotates around the sun there is light only on one part of the earth so this causes day and night.
• It takes earth about 24 hours to complete a rotation on its axis

• gravity and inertia work together to keep the earth in its orbit.
• the earth is spinning at 1000 miles per hour and the earth is 92.96 million miles from the sun, but the earth stays in orbit because gravity and inertia.

the moon's phases

• the moon has 8 total phases.
• it starts at a new moon the goes to waxing crescent, then first quarter, then waxing gibbous,then full moon, then waning gibbous, the third quarter, now finally waning gibbious.

moon's eclipses

• there are 2 eclipses.
• solar eclipse is when the moon blocks the light from the sun.
• lunar eclipse is when the moon passes through the umbra shadow which cause the moon to appear red.

moon's tides

• the moon has 2 tides.
• the spring tide is when the sun, moon, and earth are lined up causing larger high and low tides.
• neap tide is when the moon is perpendicular to the earth and sun causing smaller high and low tides.
• there are tides because of the gravitational pull from the moon.

where are we in space and why does it matter?

• If everything was not in order the way it was we would not be able to be alive.
• we would not be able to survive if we didn't have tides or even if we were on a different planet.
