  • Andy Warhol was born August6, 1928
  • He grew up in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania
  • His full name is Andrew Warhol
  • He was known as the Prince of Pop

CHILDHOOD

  • both of his parents emigrated from Czechoslovakia
  • His mother also was an artist
  • His mother would give him a chocolate bar when he finished a coloring page
  • Elementary school was thought for him cause he contracted St. Vitus' dance

SCHOOL

  • Warhol took art classes at school and at the Carnegie Museum
  • He always be found with a sketchbook in his hands
  • pale skin and white-blonde hair
  • Warhol went to Carnegie Institute of Technology

  • In his college years that Warhol discovered the blotted-line technique
  • tape two pieces of blank paper together and then draw in ink on one page
  • Before the ink dries, press the two pieces of paper together.
  • result was a picture with irregular lines that he would color in with watercolor

  • After college Warhol moved to New York
  • quickly earned a reputation in the 1950s for using the blotted-line technique
  • most famous ads were for shoes for I. Miller
  • also drew Christmas cards for Tiffany & Company
  • Created book, album covers, and illustrated Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Book of Etiquette

  • 1960, Warhol had decided to make a name for himself in pop art
  • began in England in the mid-1950s and consisted of realistic renditions
  • turned away from the blotted-line technique and chose to use paint and canvas
  • Warhol began with Coke bottles and comic strips

  • 1961 Warhol gave $50 to a friend, that told him she had a good idea
  • The idea was to paint what he liked most in the world
  • something like money and a can of soup
  • His first exhibition in an art gallery came in 1962

  • Warhol found that he couldn't make his paintings fast enough on canvas
  • he discovered the process of silk screening
  • technique uses a specially prepared section of silk as a stencil
  • immediately began making paintings of celebrities
