POMPEII HISTORY

  • 62-79 AD was the city's high
  • Located in Campania Italy
  • Ruled by Rome
  • Wealthy and prosperous
  • 1/3 of the population were slaves
  • Settled on the Sarno River
  • Imported and exported goods; olives, wines, and cheese.

  • Greek inspired architecture
  • For entertainment would watch gladiator fights or theatre
  • Religious
  • Writers and artists

POMPEII DURING THE ERUPTION

AFTER THE ERUPTION OF POMPEII

  • After the eruption in 79 A.D. The town of Pompeii was covered in volcanic ash.
  • People were killed and buried.
  • An entire city was destroyed, and hidden by the damage from Mount Vesuvius.
  • Children, homes, parents, cloths, animals, and artifacts all covered and gone for thousands of years.

AFTER THE ERUPTION

  • The eruption of Mount. Vesuvius covered and destroyed 15 kilometers of land.
  • Nine cities would be damaged, some destroyed including Pompeii.
  • The many deaths were mostly because of collapsing houses, smoke, and ash.
  • The exact amount of casualties is unknown, but 1,044 total bodies found, and many scattered bones.

  • These people varied in death."The contorted postures are not the effects of a long agony, but of the cadaveric spasm, a consequence of heat shock on corpses."
  • The collapsing of homes, and physical death could have been very agonizing, or people were killed by heat shock, and body spasms.

  • The language, art, people, and lifestyle of historic Pompeii will, be discovered, studied, and remembered for many years to come.
