Bantu Religion

  • Bantu-speaking village believed that the dead influenced the survivors. Ancestors were to remain as spirits, and were also highly respected. The living would also welcome the spirits of their ancestors at meals. Sub-Saharan Africans identified many of the spirits of natural forces, some kind and some dangerous.

The transformation by the establishment of trans-Saharan trade.

  • Trade had brought in new religions and beliefs into Africa.
  • This, affected the previous religions and beliefs. Not only did it affect what the people already believed in, it also made the people doubt their beliefs and possibly switch their religion.
  • It supplemented other religions as people used them to their economic and political advantages.
