• Lakota was one of the three groups of the Sioux living on the Great Plains
• In the 1700s the Lakota lived in the Black Hills of South Dakota, which they called "the heart of everything that is."
• The Black Hills were and still are sacred place to the Sioux
• People met there for religious ceremonies and social gatherings
