Early life

  • Pehr Henrik Ling was born in Sweden on November 15, 1776.
  • He was born a son of a minister.
  • great-great grandson of the famous Swedish scientist Olof Rudbeck.
  • He studied theology at Lund University in 1793.
  • He then transfered to Uppsala University and completed his degree in 1797

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Elaborated a system of gymnastics:
  • 1)Pedagogical 2)Medical 3)military, and 4) asthetic.
  • Invented wall bars, beams, and the box horse.
  • He was a pioneer of teaching physical education in sweden
  • He founded a teacher training center in stockholm.

LEGACy

  • Known as the prime developer of natural gymnastics.
  • Was also known as "the father of the swedish massage".
  • Pehr Henrick Ling died on May 3, 1839

THE GREEK INFLUENCE ON SPORTS AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

  • Only the Greek male citizens were allowed the oppurtunity to receive this education.
  • The two main elements in the physical education of greek boys was gymnastics and music.
  • Their health classes normally took place inside their temples.
  • Their gymnasium, which waslocated normally outside, is where the males recieved their physical training.
  • Males were encouraged to become athletes and to compete in sports that made up the Greek sporting calendar.
