Starting Out Strong
This presentation provides education students at Manor College with a few tips on starting strong this semester.

E-MAIL

Check e-mail at least once daily.

Be sure to set up your Manor e-mail. This is the email that college will use to send you important information.

As your advisor, I will use the email that you prefer.

Be sure to organize important e-mails in folders.

Always place something in the subject line. It should match your e-mail message. For example, if addressing a professor, included your name and the topic in the subject line.

Always address your receiver appropriately, such as Dear Ms. ....., or Hello, Dr. ......

Use Library Resources

Library resources are often under utilized, use them.

Manor has many LibGuides that can help you be a better student. They are available to enhance your skills and increase your academic success.

Scholarly resources are found in a library database and/or Google Scholar. Be sure to use current resources. Check with your professor to find out what they believe is a current resource.

Study Time

Studying is a must.

It not appropriate to wait until the last minute to do an assignment, plan ahead. Use the syllabus schedule to your advantage.

Working ahead assures that you have time to make corrections if needed before turning in assignment.

Finding a study partner can help you review material more effectively and can serve as another pair of eyes and ears when reviewing assignments.

Find a tutor when trouble first starts, don't wait until you are drowning.

R & R

Lack of sleep, can lead to poor academic performance and can increase your chances of not feeling well.

30 minutes of exercise a day does the body good. It will make you feel better and increase your academic performance.

Your brain needs proper rest, exercise, and food to perform well.

Use reflection time to begin or end the day on a positive note.

Fun-As teachers we have to know how to play as well. Fun is non-negotiable. Make sure you do something you love each day of the week!

Advisor

As your advisor I am easy to find.

I am usually on campus 3-4 days a week.

I love e-mail, so you will always find me in the cloud.

When calling and leaving a message, always leave a phone number for me to reach you.

Be sure to stop by and see me. I love green tea and do not mind sharing a cup with you as we chat.

Lastly, use me as a resource. I am good listener, love to do research, and share ideas.

Hope you have a great semester!
