TESTS FOR HYPOTHYROIDISM

  • Blood test
  • TSH(thyroid stimulating hormone)
  • T4(thyroxine)

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Muscle weakness
  • Thinning hair

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS CONT.

  • Slowed heart rate
  • Impaired memory
  • Depression

CURRENT TREATMENTS

  • Daily use of synthetic thyroid hormones
  • Takes 1-2 weeks for symptoms to decline

EFFECTS OF NOT TREATING HYPERTHYROIDISM

  • Birth defects
  • Goiter(bulge in neck)
  • Heart problems
  • Infertility
  • Myxedema(extreem form of hypothyroidism and is life threatening)

PREVALENCE OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

  • Estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease
  • Women are 5-8 times more likely than men to have thyroid problems
  • More common in people over 60
  • 1/8 women will develop a thyroid condition in her lifetime
