childhood

  • His father was a bus driver & was gone a lot
  • His mother was physically and mentally abusive
  • Tortured animals
  • Tried to commit first murder at 14

Precursors

  • He killed multiple animals 
  • Tried committing murder at 14
  • Admitted to killing his first victim as a young teen

Adult life

  • Enlisted into navy at 18
  • Married Claudia Barrows shortly after high school
  • Applied for a job as a police officer but was denied
  • Married Marcia Winslow- gave birth to son in 1975
  • Married Judith Mawson in 1988

victims

  • Ridgway strangled the majority of his victims
  • Span of murders: 1982-1998

mental disorder

  • Prosecutors concluded that Ridgway was not mentally ill
  • When asked about being mentally ill Ridgway said,
  • "I used to have a problem with killing women."
  • "I dont know if it was an illness, or just, uh, I wanted to kill."

Behavior

  • No one ever suspected him to be a serial killer.
  • He was never a loner.
  • Kept a steady job for 30 years.

trial

  • Made a plea bargain to avoid death penalty.
  • When families of the victims spoke Ridgway got emotional
  • and apologized.
