GENETICS VOCABULARY
BY ANTHONY RODRIGUEZ
2.
TRAITS
Definition:Something you get from your parents.
Ex:Like if you have blue or brown eyes you probably got it from your parents.
characteristic or property of an organism.
3.
HEREDITY
Definition: Something passed to the offspring by the parent.
This is why most offsprings look like there parents.
The passing of physical characteristics from one generation to another.
4.
SEXUAL REPRODUCTION
Sexual reproduction is giving berth to an offspring that requires two parents.
Ex:us humans,dogs,zebras etc.
Looks like the both parents but not just one.
5.
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
Asexual reproduction only requires one parent. It does not require fertilization.
Ex: Bacteria, and sometimes algae.
Looks like the parent or exact duplicate.
6.
GENES
Genes are made up of DNA.Gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity.
Ex. You have blue eyes because it's in your genes.
It carries the information that determines your traits.
7.
CHROMOSOMES
A thread-like structure that is located inside the nucleus of plant and animal cells.
A bundle of DNA and proteins found in the nucleus.
Ex: there are chromosomes in your DNA.
8.
DNA
DNA is what make up a lot of living things. It created you.
It contains the genetic instructions for development and function for all living things.
The code is made up of of four chemical bases.adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). This chemicals pair up.
9.
GENOTYPE
Genotype is your physical trait passed down from generation by internal genetic coding.
Is responsible for a specific trait.
10.
PHENOTYPE
Phenotype is a observable traits passed on from parent to offspring.
The color of your eyes/hair and shape of nose etc...
11.
ALLELE
