ABOUT CANNERY ROW

  • Takes place in Monterey, California in the 1930's
  • Mainly follows Mack, Doc, and little bit of Lee Chong

SUMMARY: PLOT

  • Mack rents Lee Chong's Abbeville building.
  • Mack sees Doc and thinks "We should do something nice for him."
  • Mack thinks they should throw him a party.
  • Mack gets job from Doc to collect frogs to pay for party.

SUMMARY: PLOT CON.

  • Mack and friends collect frogs
  • Buy stuff from Lee Chong's for party.
  • Mack and the boys threw party at Western Biological and wrecked the place without Doc
  • Doc comes back from trip and finds the place a mess around Mack and Doc punches him.
  • Mack feels bad after being chastised and beaten by Doc
  • Mack and the boys are scowled upon by the residents of Cannery row

SUMMARY PLOT: CON.

  • Mack and his friends dog, Darling gets sick, and Doc checks up on it.
  • Darling gets better thanks to Doc
  • String of bad luck happens on Cannery row.
  • After bad luck, Mack plans another party for Doc with help from everyone, and makes preparations.
  • Everyone on Cannery row comes together and gets Doc presents

SUMMARY: PLOT CON.

  • Doc finds out about party
  • Doc made preparations
  • Everyone plans before party
  • Party happens, everyone shows
  • Events happen, fight breaks out
  • After fight, everyone's happy
  • After party, Doc cleans up and is very happy.

CHARACTERS

  • Lee Chong- Store owner, owner of Mack's home, and is Asian America
  • Mack- Lives in the "Palace Flophouse," owned by Lee Chong, is homeless, has good intentions and is poor.
  • Doc- Owns Western Biological, Helps out Mack and friends, throws parties, helps community and shelters Frankie.

JOHN STEINBECK PORTRAYAL OF G.D.

  • He made it sound not as bad as it really was.
  • Had some elements from actual G.D. Ex. Frankie couldn't go to school, people didn't live in houses.

ACTUAL GREAT DEPRESSION

  • Homeless people lived in Hoovervilles and Shanty towns.
  • Asian-Americans forced to live on East and West coast.
  • Everyone found themselves out of work and searching for better life.
