CONVENTIONS OF A DIGIPAK

Amber Woodman

what is a digipak?

  • A digipak is a type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs
  • Digipaks are nearly always for deluxe versions of albums by the artist/band as they can hold more than one CD and have extras included

contents

  • A digipak has 6 panels: one (or more) to hold the CD; the front panel for the cover of the digipak including the name and record label; the back panel where the track listings are as well as the record label information and the last few panels are used for extra information such as lyrics, or just extra images in relation to the album

front

  • The front of the digipak is the first thing that you see, therefore it needs to catch the audience's eye and be interesting, rather than boring and dull
  • The front panel usually just has an illustration and the artist or bands name in an appealing font. These will match the conventions of their genre of music
  • Sometimes the record label's logo is featured on the front cover, but not always. Most of the information is left for the back panel, and in a digipak's case, the inside panels

back

  • The back panel is where most of the information is. It will include all the track listings and their numbers
  • At the bottom of the back panel will be where all of the copyright print is which is necessary so none of the material is stolen or copied
  • It will also have the artist/band's website (sometimes the record label's website also) and the logo of the record label

inside

  • The remaining panels usually vary as there are less set conventions, however artists usually decide to have either images, lyrics or information on the other panels
  • There will be a set panel for the CD, sometimes two if there are two CDs, where there will usually be a image in relation to the front cover
