  • Wall Street crashed
  • Markets lost 11% of their value
  • Many business lost their value
  • Many went out of business or had major layoffs

FAMILIES

  • Unemployment rate of 25%
  • Families went hungery when men lost their jobs
  • Almost no knew jobs or opportunities
  • Wages dropped along with layoffs

SHANTYTOWNS

  • Also known as Hooverviles
  • Housing spaces built by homeless people during the Depression
  • Named because people thought Herbert Hoover was responsible

FARM AND PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMS

  • The Public Works Administration, created to provide economic stimulus and jobs during
  • The Civil Works Administration, created in 1933 to make jobs for the unemployed
  • The Farm Security Administration
  • helped with rural regrowth, farm loans, and subsistence homestead programs
