INUIT

WHERE DO THEY LIVE?

  • The Inuit people live in the far north of Canada near the North Pole.
  • They also live in Alaska and Greenland.
  • It is freezing cold in these places as there are many blizzards
  • In the summer everything melts and plants grow, but the summer is not very long.

LANGUAGE

  • Inuits speak mostly English in Canada but their native language is Inukitut.
  • There are over 160,000 Inuit people today living in the acrctic regions of Alaska and Canada
  • In school the inuit learn English, Danish, French and Russian.
  • When they are home they speak Inuktitut to each other

RELIGION

  • Their religion is shamanism.
  • The Inuit didn’t have sacred buildings.
  • The nature was sacred and the inuit was a child of nature
  • "Everything had a soul and was spiritually connected"

WHAT THEY BELIEVED?

  • THE INUIT BELIEVED THAT EVERY LIVING THING HAD A SPIRIT.
  • They would call on their spirits to assist them in their lives.
  • After they hunted an animal they would sing to it

WHAT DO THEY WEAR?

  • They wear things from animals such as deer and polar bear.
  • Sealskin was usually wore in the summer.
  • "In the winter caribou skin was worn. Caribou skin was light weight yet very warm"
  • They wore stockings and boots. Their boots were called Kamiks, which are made from seal skin.

HOUSING

  • THEY LIVED IN HOUSES MADE OF DRIFTWOOD AND SOD
  • They also lived in igloos known as snow houses
  • They used snow because it is an insulator

WHAT DO THEY EAT?

THE INUIT EAT ALL SORTS OF THINGS SUCH FISH, SEALS AND WHALES.

TRANSPORTATION

  • In the winter the dogsled was a main transport.
  • The dogsled has now been replaced by modern snowmobiles.
  • in other times a walrus skin covered boat was used.
  • In the summer they also used 'Qajak'(kayaks)
  • "The kayak was ideal for summer hunting"

INUIT FACTS

  • A sign of entertainment is throat singing.
  • Inuit have no marriage ceremonies.
  • Inuit women are in charge of sewing cooking and raising the children.
  • Men are in charge of hunting and fishing.
  • They used tools to hunt such as clubs, bone knives, spears, and harpoons
