Statistics

  • 400,000 emergancy room visits from self harm
  • 1.3% of all deaths are from suicide
  • Firearms,hangings, and poisoning acount for 92% of suicides
  • One suicide happens every 17 minutes
  • In 2004 there was 32,439 deaths from suicide

signs and symptoms

  • Giving away prized and valued possessions
  • Mentions suicide 
  • Person unexpectedly says goodbye 
  • Withdraws themselves from their friends
  • Self-destructive behaviors 

Suicide Prevention Intervention DO's

  • Listen - discuss openly and calmly
  • Let them know you care and that you want to help
  • Suggest alternatives 
  • Let an adult know of the threat and concern
  • Remove all things that can be used in a suicide

Suicide Prevention Intervention Don't

  • Follow A.C.T. 
  • Say "You must be joking," or "You must be crazy."
  • Preach or dwell on how bad others will feel
  • Promise to not tell anyone 
  • Tell them to stop feeling sorry for themselves
