What is Autism?

Autism is a disorder often characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication in both verbal and nonverbal forms, and repetitive behavior.

Some Traits of Autism

How Common is Autism?

1 in 68 children have autism, but in boys the number is increased to 1 in 42. It is the fastest growing serious disability in America.

What Causes Autism?

Development of autism is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. During pregnancy, large exposure to pollution and othe chemicals and a lack of oxygen for the baby's brain can increase chances of autism. Additionally, older parents are more likely to have children with autism.

The Autism Spectrum

Autism can range from difficulty in social interactions and repetitive movements to being nonverbal and not being to live independently. 40% of people with autism have a mental disability (IQ below 70), and 25% are nonverbal. Aspergers used to be a part of the spectrum, but was later removed from it.
