PRESENTATION OUTLINE

More Chemical Quantities

Percent Composition

  • Find the mass of each component.
  • Divide the mass by the total mass of the compound and multiply by 100 to get the percent composition.

Stoichiometry

  • Means the calculations of quantities based on balanced equations.
  • The coefficients in an equation represent the number of moles so it is important that they are balanced.

Law of Conservation

  • The Law of Conservation of Mass states that mass is neither created or destroyed, it's always conserved.
  • Mass and atoms are always conserved, but moles and particles don't have to be conserved.

Mole Ratio

  • Coefficients in a balanced equation are used for mole ratios
  • Mole ratios are used to convert a compound or element into a different compound or element
  • This is how you can find the volume of one compound using the mass of an element in the same equation.

Limiting Reactant

  • The limiting reactant limits how much product is produced.
  • The limiting reactant is reactant that has the less amount, making all the other reactants in excess.

Types of Yields

  • Actual Yield - what was produced in reaction
  • Theoretical Yield - what should have been made
  • Percent Yield - how efficient your reaction was

Yields

  • Percent Yield = Actual Yield / Theoretical Yield
  • Percent Yield should be less than 100% - the Actual Yield should be less than the Theoretical Yiel
