Lives of Latinos

  • 1960 more than 900,000 Latinos lived in the US
  • The population increased sharply because of the Immigration Act of 1965
  • 1/3 of Mexican families lived below the poverty line

Movements for rights

  • Latinos wanted social justice
  • earliest effort was in California
  • 1965 farm workers went on strike
  • Cesar Chavez was leader of the strike along with Delores Huerta

Chicano movement

  • Called themselves Chicanos short form of Mexicanos
  • Alianza Federal de Mercedes (Federal Alliance of Land Grants)
  • 1967 Tijerina and followers charge into Rio Arriba courthouse

Crusade for justice

The Brown Berets

  • Militant organization in the Chicano movement
  • Also supported the efforts of Chicanos in New Mexico to recover their historic land

Boricua Movement

  • Tried to gain independence for Puerto Rico and in the US

Cuban Americans

  • Between 1965 and 1973 about 50,000 left on flights into the US
  • Majority that came came were professionals and business people
