• The population increased sharply because of the Immigration Act of 1965

Chicano movement

• Called themselves Chicanos short form of Mexicanos
• Alianza Federal de Mercedes (Federal Alliance of Land Grants)
• 1967 Tijerina and followers charge into Rio Arriba courthouse

Crusade for justice

• Corky Gonzales another leader in the chicano movement
• Formed the Crusade for Justice
• Ultimate goal was to build a unified Chicano community

The Brown Berets

• Militant organization in the Chicano movement
• Also supported the efforts of Chicanos in New Mexico to recover their historic land

Boricua Movement

• Tried to gain independence for Puerto Rico and in the US

Cuban Americans

• Between 1965 and 1973 about 50,000 left on flights into the US
• Majority that came came were professionals and business people
