STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS

  • Staph is a common bacteria found on skin and often doesn't cause disease
  • But if bacteria enters the body through a wound or respiratory tract,it will cause an infection
  • There are many types of staph but the most common ones are localized infection

SYMPTOMS

  • Pus filled abscesses (aka boil)
  • Swelling/Tenderness
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • If staph infection is in blood the symptoms include: fever chills & low BP

WHO IS SUSCEPTIBLE?

  • Anyone can develop staph but some are at higher risk:
  • Newborns
  • Cancer
  • Vascular or lung disease
  • Eczema
  • Surgical Incisions
  • Weakened immune system
  • Diabetes

HOW IS THE DISEASE SPREAD?

  • Staph infection is spread through skin-to-skin contact or from contaminated objects

HOW DOES IT SPREAD IN HOSPITAL?

  • Staph infections are spread by direct physical contact with the bacteria. The contact is frequently skin-to-skin, but it can be spread through contact with contaminated surfaces or personal items

TREATMENT

  • Antibiotics commonly prescribed to treat staph infections include Cephalosporins, Nafcillin, Sulfa drugs or vancomycin.
  • Drainage of pus

PREVENTION

  • Maintain a good hygiene:
  • wash your hands
  • Use PPE

FINANCIAL OUTCOME

  • The cost of staph infection varies, depending on the condition and severity
  • Antibiotics can cost from $10-$85
  • $200 or more for reoccurring infection that requires months of treatment
  • $1,000 a more serious or antibiotic-resistant infection.
  • $6,000-$25,000 or more for a serious systemic infection that requires hospitalization and IV antibiotics
  • $200,000 or more if there are major complications such as organ failure.
