Roman Empire

Unit 1
Monumental Architecture is structures that are created for an important purpose

EXAMPLES FROM THE ROMAN EMPIRE

  • Baths of Caracalla
  • Valens Aqueduct

WHERE ARE THESE STRUCTURES?

  • The Baths of Caracalla were built in Rome, Italy between AD 212 and 216
  • The Valens Aqueduct was built in Constantinople and was completed in the year 368 AD

Exist and Purpose- Baths of Caracalla

The Baths of Caracalla as one does not still stand because it was destroyed during the Gothic War, but remains can be found at many museums

The purpose of the complex of buildings was to be more of a leisure centre than just a series of baths

Exist and Purpose- Valens Aqueduct

This aqueduct still stands today

The purpose for this structure was to provide water to the people of the Roman capital

I would consider Valens Aqueduct to be the most important monumental architecture from the Roman Civilization. It provides something the people needed. It wasn't just something they wanted as entertainment or leisure. The aqueduct eventually reached 155 miles in length , becoming the largest, allowing it to hold a large amount of water.

Ottoman Empire
1299-1922
Unit 3

EXAMPLES FROM THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE

  • The Selimiye Mosque
  • The Ortaköy Mosque

WHERE ARE THESE STRUCTURES?

  • The Selimiye Mosque was built in Edirne, Turkey between 1569 and 1575
  • The Ortaköy Mosque was built in Turkey between 1854 and 1856

Exist and Purpose- The Selimiye Mosque

This structure still exists today

This buildings purpose was for learning and worship

Exist and Purpose- The Ortaköy Mosque

This structure still exists

The purpose for this mosque was to give Muslims a worship place

I would consider the Ortaköy Mosque to be the most important monumental architecture from the Ottoman Empire. It provides a place of worship for a great deal of Muslims. It is one of the most popular locations of the Bosphorus and is probably important to many others. This structure is also memorable to me because it was restored to new after an earthquake that caused damage.

The two civilizations I chose did not use the structures in the same manner. The Roman civilization used monumental architecture more for entertainment, such as theatres. They also used many structures such as arches to honor people. The Ottomans used the structures more for religious and cultural reasons more than anything.

The purpose of monumental architecture is to be used for something important. Monumental architecture is typically used to pay tribute to a person or people of that era. A lot of the time, they're made to last a long period of time, such as the mosques and the aqueduct. They can sometimes relate to numerous people.
