RELIGIOUS CONFLICT

HISTORY

Wars have been fought in the name of different gods and goddesses.
In Europe, Bosnian Muslims, have for more than two years, been brutally harried by Serbs.
And Muslims and Jews still shoot each other in Palestine.
After the 1948 War, more than 700,000 Jews in 8 Arab countries were forced to flee for their lives, their properties were ransacked, and their schools.

RECENT EVENTS

In 2009, Saudi Arabia intervened when a number of Huthis came across its border with Yemen.
In March 10, 2010, Christian attackers killed more than 300 Muslims in Nigeria.

RELEVANCE TO THE U.S.

The United States has characteristically remained a country of immigrants, and a country of unmatched religious diversity.
When compared with the rest of the world these two very factors alone have engendered horrible religious wars and decades of enduring conflict.

INTERNATIONAL ACTION / GOVERNMENTAL ACTION

During the Cold War, not much attention was paid to nationalism and religion.
Attention has been drawn by the increased engagement of churches or in the search for constructive management of conflicts

SOLUTIONS / COPING STRATEGIES

The declaration on the elimination of all forms of intolerance, it is the result of three decades of discussion on religious rights.
Considered a major international standard setting instrument pertaining to the freedom of religion or belief.

FUTURE OF THE ISSUE

Distribution and migration of Muslim and Christian populations will be a critical issue.
The survival of the world is at stake if Muslims and Christians cannot make peace with each other.
