HISTORY

  • Wars have been fought in the name of different gods and goddesses.
  • In Europe, Bosnian Muslims, have for more than two years, been brutally harried by Serbs.
  • And Muslims and Jews still shoot each other in Palestine.
  • After the 1948 War, more than 700,000 Jews in 8 Arab countries were forced to flee for their lives, their properties were ransacked, and their schools.

RECENT EVENTS

  • In 2009, Saudi Arabia intervened when a number of Huthis came across its border with Yemen.
  • In March 10, 2010, Christian attackers killed more than 300 Muslims in Nigeria.

RELEVANCE TO THE U.S.

  • The United States has characteristically remained a country of immigrants, and a country of unmatched religious diversity.
  • When compared with the rest of the world these two very factors alone have engendered horrible religious wars and decades of enduring conflict.

INTERNATIONAL ACTION / GOVERNMENTAL ACTION

  • During the Cold War, not much attention was paid to nationalism and religion.
  • Attention has been drawn by the increased engagement of churches or in the search for constructive management of conflicts

SOLUTIONS / COPING STRATEGIES

  • The declaration on the elimination of all forms of intolerance, it is the result of three decades of discussion on religious rights.
  • Considered a major international standard setting instrument pertaining to the freedom of religion or belief.

FUTURE OF THE ISSUE

  • Distribution and migration of Muslim and Christian populations will be a critical issue.
  • The survival of the world is at stake if Muslims and Christians cannot make peace with each other.
