PRESENTATION OUTLINE

"War is kind"

by: Stephen Crane

stephen crane

  • Crane never fought on battle, so he interviewed veterans about experience
  • Veterans gave him dry facts, they also couldn't remember much.
  • Crane drew from his imagination to fill in the thoughts.

Repetition

  • Do not weep...for war is kind
  • Do not weep..War is kind
  • A field where a thousand corpses lie.
  • ...men were born to drill and die.

Imagery

  • The symbol or picture in the poem is death
  • Death is painful, harsh, and unforgiving
  • "Raged at his breast, gulped and died"
  • Nobody really forgives them for leaving.

theme

  • Theme: pain, heartbroken and regret
  • "These men were born to drill and die"
  • "...a field where a thousand corpses lie"
  • You can tell by the tone of the Author, what hes trying to say

Irony

  • The picture basically tells it all, everybody looks depressed
  • "Mother whose heart hung humble as a button"
  • Families aren't proud of what they had to do, but in a way they are
  • "On the bright splendid shroud of your son,....war is kind"

tone

  • If i was reading this i would read it slow, and almost quite
  • The poem isn't happy so therefor the tone wouldn't be.
  • "Swift blazing flag of the regiment"

speaker

  • I would think the speaker is a daughter and mother
  • "..your father tumbled in the yellow trenches.."
  • Having a quite speaker, more emotional

questions

  • I don't understand why the Author is saying "War is kind"
  • Why would is be?
  • I love how much detail the poem has
  • "Raged at his breast, gulped and died"
  • It actually makes you picture it in your head what it would be like
