• First case in Veracruz, Mexico
• Global pandemic: virus had never before seen influenza genes
• People 60+ had some form of immunity due to previous flu vaccinations
• Estimates say killed 579000, about half who died from it were from Africa
• Affected global meat market, U.S. and global economy, and the general public
