WHERE DID THEY ORIGINATE FROM?

  • They originated from a large area, which included all, or portions of the present day states of Georgia, Tennessee , North Carolina, South Carolina , Kentucky, Alabama, Virginia, and west-Virginia

LIFESTYLE IN THE ORIGINAL TERRITORY

  • The Cherokees lived in cabins made of logs (not traditional tee-pees) they were lead by Chiefs & were highly religious/spiritual.
  • They were a heterogeneous society , diverse in character or content freely accepting members of other tribes as well as Europeans and African Americans
  • Council houses were built with 7 sides and within each council , each clan sat in front of their wall. Men were responsible for cleaning fields, helped plant crops and also hunted. The woman's main responsibility were to raise the children and tend to the crops.

EXPERIENCES DURING THE REMOVAL

  • Some wanted to stay and fight, while others thought it was more pragmatic to agree to leave in exchange for consessions and money.
  • Traveled more than 1,000 miles. Suffered with cholera and starvation. Estimated more than 5,000 died

RELOCATION

  • After the removal act was passed the Cherokees had a Long, bitter distance to the oklahoma area, where the government decided they should live.

LIFESTYLE AFTER RELOCATION

  • Some wanted to stay with their customs and religious beliefs but others were open to assimilation, as were as others to learning the "white man ways"

  • The Cherokee tribe now resides in Oklahoma, within different counties of the state
