SAMART SCHOOL

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW...

SONG SAMART

MEET:

Song Samart was born in 1989 at a time of extreme poverty for the majority of Cambodians, At the age of 12 Song convinced his Mother to allow him to go away to live in the Pagoda where he became a Novice Monk. It was here, inside the Bakong Temple, that he received a free education in Khmer, Buddhist Theology & Morality as well learning many life lessons. From the very beginning, Song was determined to make his dream of helping unprivileged kids a reality (and he never shies away from a challenge), not only did he save his own money for 3 years to build the first school, but after opening in 2011, he walked 3km to and from the Monastery every day in order to teach his first students.

Since that time, Song has put his whole heart and energy into developing Samart School. At the age of 26, what he has achieved with two schools, over 400 students and with the generous support of people from around the world, is remarkable. He believes serving his community is what he was born to do and in he is committed to his vision until his last breath. Although some days are more challenging than others, he understands this is life and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS!

SAMART SCHOOL TODAY

  • Over 400 students
  • Two schools located in Seam Reap villages
  • Volunteer program
  • 7 teachers teaching english and computer
  • Entirely non profit organization.

"NO CHILD SHOULD BE ILLITERATE."

The school provides English and computer classes to students in the surrounding villages. Most of the families in the area are farmers and do not have the means to send their children to school so Samart School provides a free supplemental education to students who could not afford it otherwise.

WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Samart School is an entirely non-profit organization, so it relies on donations from generous benefactors in order to run. Basic Monthly operating expenses:
TOTAL - $900 USD
In addition to monthly expenditures, the school also requires money for its mid and long-term needs.
The most pressing long-term goal is to raise enough money to build permanent classrooms. Currently, Samart School operates in classrooms made from borrowed material in a borrowed land. Since the materials must be returned in the near future, Education for Cambodia Organization needs to buy the rest of the land and replace the materials with structures made with sturdy walls and concrete floors.
