NAVIGUS AND PERPETUA

  • Brother and sister of St. Augustine
  • Both baptized at bequest of Monica, their mother
  • Became very religious during their lives
  • Perpetua became leader of sect of nuns in Hippo
  • Navigus was with Augustine during some of his life in Italy

HIPPO REGIUS

  • major Roman city in Africa
  • hosted several Christian groups
  • most famous bishop during Roman times was Augustine
  • fell to the Vandals after Augustine died praying for the saftey of the Christians in the city
  • very rich, wealthy city

AMBROSE

  • born c. 340
  • bishop of Milan
  • had great influence on Augustine, helped convert him to Christianity
  • led persecutions against heretics
  • has been accused of being anti-semetic

VANDALS

  • Germanic tribe that helped destroy the Roman Empire
  • broke through Roman boreders in 406 AD
  • along with the Goths, took control of the Roman Empire
  • laid siege to Hippo in 430 AD
  • Hippo fell in the same year

  • went to school at college of Carthage
  • very violent, hazed other people
  • Augustine was friends with them
  • Augustine did not participate in their violent acts

DONATISTS

  • Heretics
  • belived that sacraments were invalid if the minister was in a state of sin
  • believed that everyone who had recieved a sacrament from these ministers were invalid
  • persecuted by several Roman emperors
  • eventually died out when all members were excommunicated

  • friends of Augustine
  • helped convince him to convert to Christianity
  • told Augustine examples of conversions
  • were with Augustine throughout his conversion

  • elderly priest
  • lived in Milan
  • told Augustine about Victorinus

  • was well respected among the residents of Milan

  • lasting imppresion on Augustine
  • had to leave teaching position because Christians were not allowed to be a teacher

  • invredibly smart, made Augustine extremely proud
  • baptized with Augustine and his friend
  • died when he was sixteen years old

  • members believed only they could defeat evil
  • did not need God's help
  • Augustine was a member for some time
  • Augustine later became disenchanted with them, left soon after

  • was supposed to have all the answers to Augustine's questions
  • great orater and rhetor
  • did not impress Augustine, prompted Augustine to leave

  • both were wealthy Romans
  • Symmachus did not believe in God, tried to persucute Christians
  • Romanianus was a man who helped Monica pay for Augustine to go to college
  • Romanianus was a very wealthy family friend

ROME

  • one of the greatest empires of the ancient world
  • controled almost all of the known world
  • downfall began when groups like the Vandals and Goths began pillaging and attacking the Empire
  • was eventually split up into the Western and Eastern Empires
  • the Wets fell, but the East became stronger

CICERO, HORTENTIUS

  • Hortentius was a book created by Cicero
  • described how human happiness can be achieved
  • Cicero was one of the most famous philosophers of Rome
  • Augustine was deeply moved by Civeto and his works
  • Augustine became disillusioned when he found that the book never mentioned Christ anywhere

VALERIUS

  • bishop who persuaded Augustine to become a priest
  • Augustine had listened to a mass presided over by Valerius
  • He died in 396
  • when Valerius died, Augustine took over his role as Bishop of Hippo
