In a pumpkin pie recipe it takes 1/4 of a cup of maple syrup to make the pie. The pumpkin pie recipe serves 8 people. How many cups of maple syrup will it take to make the pumpkin pie for a serving of 20?

First write out this problem (1/4 x 2 1/2=). Before you can multiply the problem you must turn 2 1/2 into a improper fraction. Then you multiply the two fractions and your answer is 5/8.

5/8 can be taken and turned into new problems. For example the Least Common Multiple of 5 & 8 is 40. The greatest common factor of 5 & 8 is also 40.

The improper fraction from the problem was 5/2. You can change this fraction back into a mixed number by dividing 2 & 5. Then your answer will be 2 1/2.

Our answer for 1/4 x 2 1/2 was 5/8. 5/8 can't be reduced into a simplified fraction because 5 is an odd number and you cannot divide it anymore.
