THE PRESIDENTS

BY JAMES ELLIOTT

GEORGE WASHINGTON

"IT IS BETTER TO BE ALONE THAN IN BAD COMPANY"
George Washington was the first president of the United States. He served two terms in office, one of the many precedents he set. He also established a cabinet. The man wanted to be called "Mr. President" instead of "Your Highness" for they just came out of a monarchy ( Britain ) and wanted him to be nothing more than an elected official. He wanted neutrality in foreign affairs, meaning that the US would not get involved in any foreign conflicts ( that didn't last very long ). He was also the first to be inaugurated, make a inauguration speech, and the first to have a farewell address.

JOHN ADAMS

"FEAR IS THE FOUNDATION OF MOST GOVERNMENTS"
John Adams was the second president of the United States. He served one term in office, right after being Vice President for George Washington. He is renowned for the XYZ affair. The XYZ Affair was a small diplomatic episode with France dealing with problems that could break out into war. This all happened while Adams was in office.

THOMAS JEFFERSON

"HONESTY IS THE FIRST CHAPTER IN THE BOOK OF WISDOM"
Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. He is remembered for the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase was an area of land that nearly doubled the size of the US. Oddly enough, France sold it to us to gain money to fight back against the threat of war with Britain and the slave revolt in Haiti.

JAMES MADISON

"If men were angels, no government would be necessary."
James Madison was the fourth president of the United States. He was in office during the War of 1812. The war of 1812 took place from 1812-1815 (despite the name). The war erupted due to the impressment of American sailors, trade restrictions with Britain, and Britain's selling of arms to Native Americans. Madison was in office for two terms.

JAMES MONROE

National honor is national property of the highest value.
James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States. He served two terms in office. Monroe is famed for the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine stated that any act by the European nation to colonize the US would be seen as an act of aggression. It also stated that the US would not get involved in European affairs.

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS

America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy
John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States. He served one term in office. He is known for the "American System". The American System was an economic plan to have a tariff to protect American industry, have a national bank, and to have federal subsides for roads and canals and other internal improvements.

ANDREW JACKSON

One man with courage makes a majority
AndrewJackson was the seventh president of the United States. He served two terms in office. He is remembered for the "Nullification Crisis" which happened while he was in office. The Nullification Crisis stated that the federal tariffs of 1828 and 1832 were unconstitutional and therefore null. The tariffs were void in South Carolina, or so they said. Jackson said that any time a state didn't listen to congress, would be seen as an act of treason and that he would send the army down to that state and hang any man that opposed him. Brutal yet effective. The tariffs were then reduced soon after.
