FORT SUMTER

  • Fort Sumter was a federal fort in South Carolina.
  • They refused to surrender to the Confederacy.
  • In two days Fort Sumter fell.

BATTLE OF BULL RUN

  • The war would not be an easy win.
  • Union and Confederate armies fought near manassas Junction, Virginia on Bull Run Creek.
  • Union soldiers pushed back the left side of the Confederate line.
  • While the southerns fought back.

ANTIETAM

  • Was on September 17, 1862.
  • Was the bloodiest one day battle of Civil war history.
  • The Union Found out the Confederates were planning to attack Harpers Ferry.
  • George McClellan sent his troops to try to stop the from attacking Harpers Ferry.

BATTLE OF SHILOH

  • Union troops gained more control of the Mississippi River Valley.
  • It was only a two day battle and each side lost and gained ground.

SIEGE OF VICKSBURG

  • It lasted about six weeks.
  • Hunger forced the confederates to surrender.
  • The Mississippi River was then under Union control.
  • The battle was located on cliffs.

CLARA BARTON

  • She was army volunteer.
  • She formed the organization that was the American Red Cross.
  • The American Red Cross provided medical care for soldiers on the battle field.

APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE

  • On Abril 9, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse.
  • Lee had officially surrendered to Grant.
  • The Union had won the long, bloody war.
  • The Civil war was finally over after five years.
