  • Wanted to extend royal power
  • Claim to try clergy—strengthen ports
  • Archbishop Thomas Becket opposed his views
  • Henry's knights murdered Arch. Becket

WILLIAM THE CONQUERER OF ENGLAND

  • Consolidated the royal power of lords
  • Consolidate - make (something) physically stronger or more solid
