HARDNESS

The level of the minerals calcium and magnesium in water

FILTRATION

The process of passing the water through a series of screens that allows water through, but not larger solid particles

WHAT FACTORS CAN AFFECT
WATER QUALITY?

1. Certain substances, iron, which can affect the taste or color
2. Chemicals or microorganisms which can be very harmful

WHY IS DRINKING WATER OFTEN TREATED?

To ensure that it is clean and safe to drink

WHAT OFTEN HAPPENS
TO WASTEWATER?

1. Treatment plants
2. Septic systems

OFTEN ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS A SEPTIC SYSTEM?

A septic system is a wastewater treatment system centered around an underground tank containing bacteria that treat wastewater as it passes through, also known as a septic tank.

HOW DOES HARD WATER DIFFER FROM SOFT WATER?

Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. Soft water, on the other hand, contains lower levels of calcium and magnesium.

WHAT IS THE ORDER IN WHICH THE
SEPTIC SYSTEM TREATS SEWAGE?

1. Sewage flows into the septic system
2. Bacteria breaks down waste material into simpler chemicals
3. Cleaner water leaves the tank and flows into a leach field
