1080 Poison

Yellow hat thinking

• Increases native breading rates
• Birds are increasing in population
• Pests eat other pests that have been infected by 1080, causing them to die. This is also known as a triple predator hit.
• Native trees and plants are growing better because there aren't as many possums to eat them.

Black hat thinking

• Cows can pick up the disease by just sniffing an infected animal
• There are no antidotes so if a human happened to accidentally eat 1080, there isn't a cure
• Affected animals take a while to decompose, so there is a high risk that other animals that eat it will die
• Animals die in pain
• Kills other animals such as cows,deer birds and many other animal

Red hat thinking

• Even though 1080 has its risks, ever since New Zealand has started using this poison there has been impressive increases in our native bird population. I believe we should keep using 1080.
