The Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, attempted to turn the country of Cambodia to “year-zero” in 1975 by purifying the country and turning it into a self-sufficient and isolated agricultural state, ultimately leading to 30% of the population dying within 3 years, and many still feeling the impact 30 years later.
