PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MARS

FACT AND DISCOVERIES

FACT

  • 4th planet from the sun
  • Second smallest planet in the solar system
  • Day length: slightly under 24h
  • 2 moons: Deimos and Phobos
  • Surface temperature: -87*- 5*

For hundreds of years ago, when the sun and the moon where the only visible things seen in the sky, expect for a red dot(Mars) they didn't know what it was and the dot became a frustration. To name it, they thought of something that was a frustration.

NAME

  • From the god of war, frustration
  • Mars
  • Got it because of it's red surface
  • Also called " the red planet
  • Moons the gods brothers

EARTH&MARS

  • Differences in size, temperature& atmosphere
  • Canyons, volcanoes& impact basins like the ones on earth
  • The dry surface area is almost the same
  • Because 2/3 of the Earth's is oceans
  • Their is a difference of 1.55* on the tilt of the axis

THE STUDY OF MARS

  • Mars may be able to carry life on it in the future
  • We want to study Mars because the Earth&Mars comes from a proto planetary cloud
  • We're humans and we want to know if we're all alone
  • in the universe& if there is anywhere their might be life anywhere else
  • Global warming

EXPLORING MARS

ROVERS

  • 4 successful rovers
  • Nasa project
  • Mission: to find a trace of life
  • "Mariner 4" 1964
  • Hard to land on Mars

DISCOVERIES

  • Several successful discoveries
  • Jelly doughnut, "Star Trek" symbols, lizard
  • "Blueberries": 10 years ago, puzzle ever since
  • Marble size, dark blue colour, blueberry
  • Sign of water, as well as water patterns

WATER ON MARS

  • 3.8 billion years ago Mars was warmer and wetter
  • Atmosphere, warmer temperature
  • Gullies created from rain, snow melt( for example) or the groundwater
  • Canyons could have been carved out of rain
  • Minerals support the discovery of water

TERRAFORMING MARS

  • To terraform Mars, we need to know hey it cooled down and if there has been life on Mars
  • There is evidence that Mars had a thicker atmosphere and that it was a warmer planet
  • Where did all the carbon dioxide and oxygen go? Is it "hidden" in the volcanos or is it in space
  • Technology says it is possible to create global changes on Mars
  • Just raising the atmosphere's pressure and surface temperature alone will take a few decades

GREENHOUSE EFFECT ON MARS

  • The greenhouse effect on Mars is very low compared to the Earth because,
  • Mars has a thin atmosphere and therefore have a low greenhouse effect
  • What helped Mars to keep it warm was large amount of hydrogen "hidden" in the volcanos
  • Where did the hydrogen go, so Mars cooled down?
