WAVES

BY: LAURA C. HOUR: 1ST

What is a wave?

A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place. Ex: longitudinal & transverse

Transverse wave

Waves that move the medium at right angles to the direction in which the waves travel are called Transverse waves. (Transverse means "across")

Longitudinal wave

Longitudinal waves move the medium parallel to direction in which the waves travel.

What carries a wave?

Most kinds of waves need something to travel through. Waves travel along the surface of water.the material through which a wave travels is called a Medium.

Properties of Waves

The basic properties of waves are Amplitude, Wavelength, Frequency, and Speed.

Amplitude

Amplitude is the maximum distance that the particles of the medium carrying the wave move away from their rest position.

Wavelength

The distance between two corresponding parts of a wave is its wavelength.

Frequency

Wave frequency is the number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time.

Speed

The speed of a wave is how far the wave travels in a given length of time.

Interactions of Waves

Some interactions of waves include Reflection, Refraction, Diffraction, and Interference.

Reflection

When an object it a wave hits a surface through which it cannot pass, and bounces back, is called reflection.

Refraction

The bending of waves due to a change in speed is called refraction.

Diffraction

When a wave moves around a barrier or through an opening in a barrier, it bends and spreads out. This is called, diffraction.

Interference

Interference is the interaction between waves that meet.

Standing Waves

If the incoming wave and reflected wave have just the right frequency, they produce a combined wave that appears to be standing still. This is called a standing wave.

Seismic waves

A seismic wave is a wave produced by an earthquake. Ex: P wave (primary wave.) S wave (secondary waves).

Sound Waves

Sound is a disturbance that travels through a medium as a longitudinal wave.

Electromagnetic Waves

Is a transverse wave that transfers electrical and magnetic energy. An electromagnetic wave consists
