BASIC INFORMATION

  • December 7th, 1941
  • Japanese bombed U.S. military base
  • 2,403 Americans died and 1,178 were wounded
  • The following day, December 8, the U.S. declared war on Japan

4 KEY EVENTS

  • Early in the morning on December 7, close to 360 Japanese planes attacked about 33 American ships
  • 2,400 Americans lost their lives with only very few Japanese dead
  • This attack motivated the U.S. to declare war on Japan
  • The Japanese bombing Pearl Harbour caused the 'revenge' bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which ultimately ended WW2

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Plans for a surprise attack against the U.S. were begun as early as January of 1941
  • Japan, now one of America's strongest allies, is the largest source of international tourists to the state of Hawaii. They pay their respects at Pearl Harbour just as Americans do
  • Survivors of the attack have the option to join their lost comrades and make Pearl Harbour their final resting place
