  • Peasants had to pay taxes even though they had little opportunity to earn the money. Also, the taxes only went to the upper class.

BEGINNING OF THE REVOLUTION

JUNE 20TH, 1789

  • The Third Estate was locked out of their meeting room.
  • So, they broke into the Tennis Court so they could have their meeting.
  • They did not leave until they drew up a new constitution.
  • That was made into the TENNIS COURT OATH.
  • Jacques Louis David is the painter.

STORMING OF BASTILLE

  • July 14th, 1789
  • A mob searching for gunpowder and arms stormed the Bastille, a Paris Prison.
  • The angry attackers hacked the prison commander and several guards to death.
  • Then, they paraded the streets with the dead mans heads on spikes.
  • Ever since then, July 14th became a French national holiday.
  • Jean-Pierre Houēl is the artist of the painting.

DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MAN

  • August 25th, 1789
  • "Men are born and remain free and equal rights."
  • "Liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression."

RADICAL PHASE OF THE REVOLUTION

GUILLOTINE

  • Artist unknown.
  • Guillotines were used to behead people during the French Revolution.
  • The beheaded people included the King and Queen of France.

ROBESPIERRE

  • Artist: anon(1790).
  • He was the leader of Jacobins.
  • He was also the cause of the Reign of Terror.

DANTON

  • Was painted in Paris.
  • Was a leading figure during the beginning of the French Revolution.

NAPOLEON ASCENDANT

THE BATTLE OF AUSTERLITZ

  • December 2nd, 1805
  • Also known as the battle of the Three Emperors.
  • Was one of the most important and decisive engagements of the Napoleonic Wars.
  • Painter: François Gérard

BATTLE OF JENA

  • October 14th, 1806
  • France vs. Prussia and Saxony
  • Napoleon I vs. Frederick William III of Prussia
  • France won a "decisive" victory.
  • Painter: Horace Vernet

BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR

  • Painter: J.M.W. Turner
  • October 21st, 1805
  • United Kingdom vs. France and Spain
  • Britain's naval fleet was very, very strong. 22 Franco-Spanish ships were lost without one Britain ship being lost.
  • Britain won against the French and Spanish.

REASONS FOR NAPOLEONS DECLINE AND FALL

BATTLE OF NATIONS AT LEIPZIG

  • Painter: unknown
  • October, 1813
  • Was fought in Saxony.
  • Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Sweden was led by Tsar Alexander I of Russia and Karl Philipp.
  • The French, Polish, Italian, and some German troops were led by Napoleon I.
  • Napoleons group were defeated by Russia's group.

NAPOLEON ON ELBA

  • Painter: Jacques-Louis David
  • A large allied army invaded France and captured Paris, forcing Napoleon to give up in April, 1814.
  • He was exiled to the island of Elba.
  • France lost most territories they had conquered since the revolution.
  • Napoleon managed to escape from Elba in February of 1815.

BATTLE OF WATERLOO

  • Painter: William Sadler
  • Sunday, June 18th, 1815
  • Near Waterloo (present day Belgium)
  • France's army, led by Napoleon, lost to the seventh coalition, who formed when Napoleon returned from Elba.
  • The end of the Battle of Waterloo also ended Napoleons reign as Emperor of France.
